VOCAL-KY CONDEMNS ORDINANCE THAT WOULD CRIMINALIZE HOMELESSNESS IN LOUISVILLE

LOUISVILLE, K.Y. — In response to an ordinance being put on the Metro Government’s agenda that would fine people who are homeless for finding shelter on the streets of Louisville, VOCAL-KY released the following statement, attributable to Shameka Parrish-Wright, Director of VOCAL-KY:

“This ordinance will not help our homeless community in any way. Instead, it will cause stress and trauma, and lead to pretrial incarceration. We already have houseless people dying in our jails, and this ordinance will only fuel that crisis. When I was homeless and without a car, my family had to carry everything with us, making us even more vulnerable. Passing this horrible legislation will cost us as taxpayers in every way, not to mention the immeasurable cost of dignity and humanity of people just looking for safe, secure housing. We deserve better and we can do better in Louisville.”
